Port → Protocol

Port Anatomy

Port

A numbered logical endpoint that helps a device send traffic to the correct service.

Protocol

The service or rule set using that port, such as SSH, DNS, HTTPS, or SMB.

TCP vs UDP

TCP is connection-oriented and reliable. UDP is lighter and commonly used where speed or simplicity matters.

Open, closed, filtered

Open means a service responds. Closed means no listener. Filtered often means a firewall or ACL is interfering.

Inbound vs outbound

Inbound rules protect services receiving connections. Outbound rules control what clients and agents can reach.

Firewall thinking

Good troubleshooting asks: source, destination, port, transport, service status, route, and security policy.
